There is nothing worse then reading a bunch of vulgarity in chat. People of every age play and as an adult I don't want to see such garbage. If you try and bypass the filters than its a violation.

Speaking with such profanity and vulgarity just proves the low caliber and self esteem of the individual in question. If your vocabulary is so limited that you can't control or choose to use different language then I don't want you here either.

The same goes for TS/Vent. If I guest in with a group and some one is spouting off with that stuff, I say that if they keep it up I am leaving. I have done it many times, and will again for sure.

Just because someone chooses to swear doesn't mean they lack the vocabulary to do otherwise. They're only words...who cares? It's the arbitrary taboo levied on society that says they're bad. What's the difference between the word F*** and the "word" NOOB? They're both used in derogatory manners, just one is on the centuries old taboo list, and the other is not. The same goes for "retard", "fag", "idiot", "moron", "jerk", etc. Any word used in an inflammatory manner should be filtered. The "special" words are only filtered because of the status quo's shunning of their use in common speech.

I swear all the time. I obviously possess the vocabulary to do otherwise, but I choose not to. Why? Because I don't like to put on airs just to appease insecure fragile little creatures who have no business participating in the conversation anyway.

You have to realize that some of these people water down why they really got banned. So really it probably wasn't the fact that they said sh-- in all chat but a combination of things. Just fyi.

And that is how a lot of people feel. Unfortunately for them they still get reported and banned for doing it by this insecure fragile little creatures. Sometimes you have to mind the fragile creatures if you want to keep playing.

Mehhhhh

I think any online game that comes out from now on should have "online interactions WILL EXCEED THE AGE LIMIT FOR THIS GAME That was rated by ESRB." Instead of the online interactions are not rated. Reason? This would give me more of an excuse to flame the little kids away that moan when they hear a "bad word, omg!" (need thicker skin when online) And a reason to give the parents (yes i had this happen once) who complain when i say something and get them sayin "you know my kid is playing thins game hes very young"....

about the children protection argument..believe me or not, almost all of them already know much more "dirty words" than they can learn from people ingame

I'm not saying it's right. I completely agree that parents should be more careful about that as it does say that on the box. But sometimes you have to appease them if you want to keep playing. It's very sad and parents should be more careful about that but unfortunately they are not.

Language in gw doesn't bother me, unless its over the top. like if you die in a 1v1, say something like GG, and then get aload of abuse back, encluding every swear word one could come up with, that kind of stuff i report, which isn't often.

When I say "shit," that's exactly what I mean. When I say "bullshit," that's exactly what I mean. When I say "[redengine]," that's exactly what I mean.

I don't say "excrement," "blatant falsehood," or "have sex." If you do, that is you who has the limited vocabulary, not me. I say exactly what I mean. You lose meaning by looking for alternate words.

Reading your post, I'm reminded of something Carlin once said. "He's full of shit!"

I keep my profanities for the Alliance/Guild/PM chat.
That prevents people that I don't really care about from throwing a hissy fit because of things that weren't even meant for them.

In most places it is illegal to walk around nude. You don't see people complaining about being fined or arrested if they go nude where they should. Why not? People can choose to look somewhere else or close thier eyes.

Filter does not give permission, it is there for when people break the rules.

I miss the days when there was no such thing as /report. It has honestly not made the community a better place, it has only made problems.

It's brought some problems, but mainly its brought existing problems into the light. The main backlash is the people who were reported feel the need to tell everyone about it.

This is a deep lack of understand of languages. Not being an English native speaker who lives in an English-speaking country taught me that words do not only have a meaning that you can find in dictionaries, they have a deeper meaning that cannot be easily conveyed by words. Emotions, context, manners and conventions (Japanese is interesting from this point of view as it is influenced by the relationship between people talking; I could also see important differences between French and English, the former having two forms of the word "you", one of which is used to convey respect and politeness).

Except these swearwords: these words are mostly used in a derogatory manner, to insult people or strengthen insults, to express strong and negative emotions, to push people away, etc. Of course you actually don't need these words to do that, but can you find a positive use of these words? Some may argue that they have an emotional nature that should not be remove, but then I'd suggest to go out and do some serious sport instead of using words to convey such strong emotions. I'm not a word nazi, I think that it is a better strategy .

I know that the swearwords can become culturaly "acceptable" to a certain extent, it was quite challenging to work with Irish colleagues, who use them as we use punctuation in sentences. This however does not make them any less "offensive" when put in a different culture (it's quite difficult to leave disconnected from the worlds nowadays...).

One can claim, sitting on the chair of its high principles of "freedom of speech", that people should simply close their ears or turn their chat filters on, but this is a deep misunderstanding of the issue. (apart from the problem of wanting absolute freedom without accepting the consequences of one's word) People will always abuse language, whatever safeguards you put in place. Bypassing a chat filter often become a game (hello 4chan), at the expense of those that actually speak normally.

In this kind of discussion, people will often mention that one has to be "fragile" to not accept swearwords, in whatever form they're found. It may well be true, but this shows not only how insensitive those that think they're not fragile are, it also shows how much social progress our societies must achieve to become trully "civilised", in the sense of not letting the "law of the strongest" blind us from deeper truth.

(re-reading myself, I realise that I haven't expressed myself in the clearest way possible, but my time and command of the English language only allows me to do that)

Way to go Fril, you turned it intellectual. IS NOTHING SACRED?! Obscenities only are allowed and the usual tired arguments of:

Use common sense/grow a bigger vocabulary/learn some self control

and the counter

This is a teen game/all kids have heard worse/lighten up/if you don't want to hear it leave
